The outdated trend of the 2010s: grey walls with grey flooring!

If it’s a newly built home or was remodeled in the 2010s, the odds are pretty good that it does.

Along with all things modern farmhouse, the biggest trend of the 2010s was grey-on-grey. Grey walls with grey LVP flooring. SO many houses were renovated to have this look!

And for some reason, builders today are still pairing gray walls with gray flooring in new construction homes.

But it’s time to BREAK OUT of this 2010s grey world once and for all!

Brighten up your space by repainting the grey walls in a color like Chantilly Lace.

How to update a house with grey floors

If your home has grey flooring you could do one of two things:

  1. Rip out all the flooring and install a more neutral, timeless wood or LVP flooring.
  2. Repaint your interior walls a different color that brings light to the room and coordinates well with the grey floors.

Choice 1 is going to be super expensive. So, if you’re like most homeowners, you’ll probably want to go with choice 2 for now.

So let’s dive into some of the best options for wall colors that go well with grey flooring…

Grey flooring has cool undertones. So for your walls, you’re going to want to stay in this world of cool undertones.

Paint color that is too warm will clash with grey floors.

Cool-toned paint doesn’t mean that the space will feel cold or sterile. Instead, it will complement the tones in the flooring and make the whole room feel more cohesive.

The absolute best choices for cool wall colors will be in the blue, white and green color categories.

Worst wall colors to use with gray flooring

On the flip side, there are some paint colors that you absolutely NEED to avoid if you have gray flooring.

  • Avoid gray wall colors, especially dark wall colors. Gray walls paired with gray flooring is going to feel dark and drab, and could even affect your mood.
  • Avoid warm yellowish or tan paint colors. The warmth of these colors will clash too much with the grey flooring.
  • Avoid bright colors, such as turquoise and orange. I generally wouldn’t recommend these colors for any room, but with grey flooring it would really clash.
  • Avoid deeply saturated colors, such as reds and purples.

Best blue paint colors to pair with grey floors

Blue and grey look SO good together.

And it’s because both of these colors have dominate cool undertones.

So if you’re wanting wall colors for grey floors, a blue is going to be one of the best choices.

However, not ALL blues will work well with grey. Avoid bright blues like turquoise or teal.

You could go with darker blues or lighter blues, but the most important factor is that the blue color should have dominate cool undertones.

These are my favorite blues to use with grey flooring:

Sherwin Williams Tradewind

Tradewind is a light blue paint color with just the smallest hint of green. The cool gray undertones pair beautifully with gray flooring.

Benjamin Moore Dusky Blue

Dusky Blue is a soft blue that has less green undertones than Tradewind. It’s a beautifully calming blue that would made a great color for a bedroom.

Benjamin Moore Water’s Edge

Water’s Edge is a mid-tone blue color. I especially love this color when paired with white, and it makes a stunning kitchen island color for two tone kitchen cabinets.

Sherwin Williams Naval

If you’re wanting to go a darker, consider using Naval by Sherwin Williams. This deep navy blue is perfect to pair with grey flooring because, unlike other navy colors, the touch of grey undertones in the paint help tone down the rich saturation of the deep blue.

Best white paint colors for grey floors

If you really want to brighten up a space, white paint color is always the best choice.

But there are so many white colors! And you’ll want to make sure you choose the right shade of white to coordinate with your grey flooring.

So it’s best to go with white paint colors that lean on the brighter side and have cooler undertones. Avoid warm whites and creamy whites!

Here are the best white paint colors to pair with grey:

Benjamin Moore Super White

Super White has its name for a reason: it’s a pretty darn bright white with very little undertones. If you’re looking for a modern, crisp white – this might be the choice for you.

Benjamin Moore Chantilly Lace

Chantilly Lace is one of the most popular white colors and for good reason. This is another bright white that has very little undertones.

It’s just a wink warmer than Super White, but not so much that it would look creamy.

Sherwin Williams Extra White

Extra White can be a good choice for interior walls, but I wouldn’t recommend it for cabinetry.

On walls, Extra White will go really well with gray floors because the subtle blue undertone will keep the shade looking cool. But on cabinets, this shade can sometimes read more warm with subtle yellow undertones peeking through.

Sherwin Williams Pure White

I feel like whenever I write about neutral or white paint colors, Pure White is always one of my top recommendations!

But this is for good reason! Pure White is hands down one of the best all-around white paint colors for interior walls.

There’s just the slightest hint of warmth in Pure White, but only enough to make this bright white feel soft and subdued, and nowhere close to make it look like creamy.

Best green paint colors that work with grey flooring

Is green the new grey?

Probably, but if we learned anything from the 2010s it’s this: DON’T GO OVERBOARD!

If you’re loving green at the moment, I’d recommend being strategic about which rooms to paint green.

Personally I think an office, a guest bedroom or even a kitchen island would be the ideal places to experiment with this on-trend color.

And if you have grey flooring, you’ll want to stick with green paint colors that are more grey-green. Avoid emeralds, forest greens and minty greens.

Here are the best choices for shades of green that go well with grey:

Benjamin Moore October Mist

This was Benjamin Moore’s Color Of The Year in 2022. October Mist is actually a warm green BUT it has a lot of grey undertones in it, and this helps bring October Mist down to a more neutral place.

Sherwin Williams Coastal Plain

Coastal Plain is a cool muted green. As the name suggests, it would make an excellent choice for a modern coastal-inspired interior. This color works just as well on a kitchen island as it does on walls.

Sherwin Williams Clary Sage

Clary Sage has the most subtle undertone of yellow, which is warm, but the dominating the grey undertones prevent it from going too warm.

I actually prefer this color on cabinets and paired with white walls.

Sherwin Williams Evergreen Fog

Evergreen Fog was Sherwin Williams’ 2022 Color of the Year (did they collude with Benjamin Moore or did we all just LOVE green that year?!).

This has become a major favorite color since then, and it’s easy to see why. Even though gray plays a major part in this green color, there’s some blue at play in there too. And this makes Evergreen Fog more of a chameleon that works well in so many places!
