This post is all about the best throw pillow combinations for spring.
One of my favorite ways to redecorate each season is with throw pillows.
They’re a really easy and affordable way to change up or add texture, color, and personality.
But I know from experience that selecting and arranging throw pillows can feel overwhelming.
So in this post, I’ll share a few tips on how you can confidently mix and match throw pillows like a designer.
PLUS I’ll share a few of my favorite pillow combos for spring!

The best pillow sizes for perfect combinations
The key to a well-balanced throw pillow arrangement is varying sizes. Here’s a simple guide to get started:
- 22×22 inches: This is the largest size I’d suggest for a sofa.
- 20×20 inches: If you can’t find a 22″ pillow you like, a 20″ pillow is a good stand-in.
- 18×18 inches: This is the perfect medium size for layering in front of larger pillows.
- 12×20 inches (Lumbar): I always like to add a lumbar because it breaks up all the squares and adds variety.
- 14×36 inches (Long Lumbar): This longer lumbar size works beautifully on beds or deep sofas.
Quick tip: Stick to odd numbers…three or five pillows look better than an even number.

What NOT to do when mixing throw pillows
Even the best throw pillow combinations can go wrong if a few common mistakes are made. Here’s what to avoid:
- Using only one size – A row of same-size pillows looks flat and uninspired.
- Matching everything perfectly – Pillows that match too much can feel overly staged and lack depth.
- Using the same textures – Just like with colors and patterns, using the same textures all on your pillows will feel boring.
- Ignoring scale in patterns – If you try to mix patterns, but the patterns are all large or small, the whole look will feel too busy. Pair a large-scale print with a small-scale one to avoid this mistake.
- Overloading the sofa – Did you ever see that insurance commercial where it shows a woman with so many pillows on the sofa that they had to remove half just to sit down? Yeah, don’t do that. If your guests have to remove pillows just to sit down, you’ve gone too far!

One last tip for creating your perfect pillow combo
A little designer secret is using larger inserts in pillow covers.
So if you have a pillow cover that’s 22″, you’ll want to put a 24″ pillow insert in it.
If your pillow cover is 18″, use a 20″ insert. And so on.
Using larger inserts in pillow covers will help your pillows look much more plush!
