This post is about reading nook ideas for small spaces.

As a designer, I love to plan out little corners in a home where someone can escape into the pages of a good book.

But let’s be honest, not all of us have sprawling libraries with floor-to-ceiling shelves and a rolling ladder (a girl can dream, right?).

That’s where the magic of a well-thought-out reading nook comes in.

Even the tiniest spaces, like that awkward alcove under your stairs or the empty spot by a window, can be transformed into a cozy retreat with the right touch of creativity.

So grab your favorite blanket, and let’s explore some charming reading nook ideas designed to fit perfectly into small spaces.

Window seat reading nook with built-ins

This cozy space combines two great elements: a window and built-in shelves that cocoon the seat.

Not only does a window provide great light for reading, but the built-ins on each side also help balance out the space and create a focal point in the room.

The open shelving under the bench seat is also a great place to stash books and a blanket.

Under stairs reading nook

Put that unused area under your stairs to good use with a tucked away reading nook!

This is probably one of my favorite reading nook ideas for small spaces because it utilizes what so many families already have – unused space that can be repurposed into a surprising and delightful usable space with storage!

Fireplace reading nook

If you don’t have quite enough room build a custom built-in bench, you can still create a cozy corner like this.

Simply adding a standard bench, a few pillows and some good lighting to an empty space beside a fireplace can create a designated area that feels intentional.

Attic reading nook with storage

An attic space or even upstairs bonus room can be turned into a quiet retreat.

The sloped ceiling of these upstairs nooks lends its perfectly to creating a space that feels tucked away from the world.

Utilize the walls for book storage and add drawers in the bench seat to keep extra blankets.

Bay window reading nook

A bay window was MADE for built-in bench seating!

The only downside is the lack of built-in bookshelves around the seating area.

But you can easily overcome that by adding drawers in the bench seat and a nearby pedestal table.

Cozy closet reading nook

If you have a small closet to spare, you can easily transform it into a cozy reading nook!

Simply remove the clothing rails and door. Then add a custom bench, battery powered wall sconce and shelves to one side.

Leaving the shelves on one side will give you plenty of head room to nestle into the space.

Bedroom reading nook

Extra seating in a bedroom is always useful, whether you’re slipping off your shoes or curling up with a good book.

A reading nook in a bedroom, especially a primary bedroom, can make the room go from feeling like an ordinary bedroom to suddenly a luxurious retreat.

Designer tips for how to create a reading nook for small spaces

Creating a reading nook in a small space is all about comfort, creativity, and clever design.

First, plan your seating:

  • The bench seat should be about 16 to 18 inches in height from the floor.
  • The seat itself should be at least 20 inches deep to ensure it’s wide enough to comfortably lay down.
  • And I always like to recommend a cushion of no less than 2 inches in thickness.

And don’t forget the must-haves: a couple of plush throw pillows, a soft blanket, and a mix of natural light and a warm lamp glow.

I hope you’ve gotten some inspiration from these reading nook ideas for small spaces. Whether you’re tucking a nook into a corner or repurposing a windowsill, remember that the best reading spots are the ones that make you want to stay just a little longer, even after the last page.
