This post is a before and after reveal of our new modern traditional bedroom makeover!

I am SO excited because our primary bedroom makeover is complete! It took awhile, but with some new furniture and a little bit of construction, our design vision has finally come to life.

Designing the modern traditional bedroom

In a previous post I shared the initial design plans for the bedroom makeover.

Like any design project, some details changed. For example, when it was finished we went with just one chair instead of two.

But for the most part, we were able to stick to the original design plan. And it always helps time-wise and financially when you can stay on course and not make a lot of changes to the original plan.

The board and batten fireplace

The biggest change is the addition of the new board and batten fireplace wall.

I’ve always loved the idea of a fireplace in a bedroom. In this particular case, there was enough room to build a fireplace wall that could house a built-in electric fireplace.

Board and batten molding is featured throughout our home, so it made sense to add this detail to the newly constructed bedroom fireplace wall as well.

We selected an electric fireplace with natural looking flames so that it would be extra cozy. In the winter, we can select from a range of heat settings to warm up the room.

Or – and here’s the best part, we can leave the heat setting off and still enjoy the ambiance of the flames.

The new board and batten fireplace wall houses an electric fireplace and provides a place for our Samsung frame tv. The frame was made custom at Hobby Lobby.

The framed TV

We first bought the Samsung Frame TV in 2020. But we never got around to actually framing it until we did this room makeover.

Decorative frames that are made especially for this tv cost a fortune. Samsung charges hundreds of dollars, and they don’t even look that great.

So, we ended up DIYing it by taking precise measurements and getting a custom frame made for it at Hobby Lobby.

It cost less than $200 (which is still $400-$600 less than what we could find online) and in my opinion looks even better than Samsung’s frames.

Now it really does look like an art piece as it hangs above our fireplace!

The furnishings and decor

My design style could probably be described as modern traditional, and that comes across in the furniture and decor here.

The bed is a modern silhouette black steel four poster bed with neutral linen upholstered headboard and panels.

The solid wood nightstands are also black and in a very traditional style. I LOVE these nightstands because of the amount of storage space: 2 deep drawers plus an open shelf.

I replaced the bronze knobs on the nightstands with these gleaming brass knobs. I love how they pop against the black.

The overall look is neutral with just a touch of jewel-tone color.

Never underestimate the power of mixing high-low items in your decor.

The white lamps with linen shades and the linen drapes are all Target finds! I couldn’t believe how the drapes matched the bed’s headboard PERFECTLY!

Since all of the furniture is in neutral tones, I knew I could bring color in with the rug. This vintage-inspired Loloi rug in Ocean Spice is such a gorgeous blend of teal, green, brown and cream. And it’s SO soft! Definitely the perfect bedroom rug.

And finally, in the corner by the fireplace sits our reading nook chair.

I know the joke is that a chair in a bedroom is just a place to throw clothes. But because this boucle chair is SO cozy, we keep it clear of any clothes so we can always curl up with a good book.
