The Top 2024 Home Decor Trends I’m Excited About

This blog post is all about the newest 2024 home decor trends. These are the design and home decor elements that more designers are starting to add to new construction homes and renovations.

I always advise that if you’re going to incorporate a trend into your home, you should probably take the architectural style of your house into consideration first. Then, try to apply the home decor trends in ways that won’t break the bank. So for each design trend below, I’ve added some suggestions on how you could apply it to your home in simple ways…

2024 home decor trends for your home

I want to start off by saying it’s important not to go all-in on something JUST because it’s trendy right now. Trends come and go for the most part. What’s most important is that you design and decorate your home in a way that you love!

That being said, there’s also a reason why some things become trends. Different design styles become popular because they’re aesthetically pleasing. Lots of people like the way something looks and want to do something similar in their own home. And there’s nothing wrong with that.

Moody paint colors

Before you panic, white paint isn’t going out of style. White painted rooms is a classic choice that will never go out of style…if you’re using the right shade of white.

(Psssst…I created a quick and handy guide on the best white paint colors to use in any room…you can grab it for free here)

BUT what we will see more of in 2024 will be dark, moody colors. Deep muted reds, dark greens, and even black paint colors are showing up in more secondary spaces of the home like powder rooms, home offices and mudrooms.

I’ve always LOVED a moody moment, so I’m excited to see others fully embracing dark paint colors more and more.

How to get in on this trend: Paint is the easiest update to make in your home since it’s so low commitment and relatively affordable to change. You can create your own moody moment by painting secondary spaces in your house a darker color. I’m loving this trend in a powder room or home office, but dark colors are also beautiful on kitchen cabinetry.

Color drenching

Color drenching…aka painting the walls, trim and ceiling in the same paint color…just may be one of THE biggest 2024 interior design trends.

This trend looks best with muted paint colors and in rooms that you want to feel either more formal (like a dining room) or cozy (like an office or bedroom).

How to get in on this trend: To get this look right without having too much contrast, you’ll want to vary the sheen used throughout the room only slightly. Paint your ceiling and walls in the same color with a flat or eggshell sheen. Then paint all of the trim and mouldings in the same color with an eggshell (if your walls are in flat) or satin sheen (if your walls are in eggshell).

Natural wood kitchen cabinets

Hold on to your all-white kitchen lovin’ hat, because natural wood kitchen cabinets are back in a big way.

Now I’m not talking about the return of those 1990s honey oak cabinets, or even the deep cherry tones of the early 2000s. The updated trend of wood kitchen cabinets are more neutral in beautiful shades of light white oak or rich dark walnut.

Does this mean the white kitchen is outdated? Absolutely not! White kitchens will always be a classic choice. So if you have a white kitchen and love it, keep what makes you happy!

How to get in on this trend: Before you commit to a large kitchen renovation with all-new wood custom cabinetry, see if you could just update the exterior surfaces of your cabinets with a solution like Semihandmade’s cabinet door and drawer fronts. Or ask a local cabinet maker if they can create new custom wood panels for your existing cabinetry. You could also try incorporating wood cabinetry with a two-toned design, like this one:

More millwork and wall treatments

In the 2010s, shiplap was everywhere. Now, we’re seeing shiplap sort of phase out (though in some houses it still very much looks good) and a variety of other wall treatments are gaining popularity.

Board and batten, vertical tongue-and-groove, and beadboard details are being used more often in new builds and renovations. Millwork like this is such a great way to add interest to an otherwise plain wall.

Other 2024 home decor trends for wall treatments include plaster/textured walls. I am LOVING this trend because the soft plaster look can add a subtle design element that instantly elevates the space.

Wallpaper is also back! But this isn’t your grandma’s rosebud floral wallpaper or even your mom’s Tuscany-inspired ceiling trim. New high-end wallpaper is downright gorgeous and looks more like classic art murals than repeating flower designs.

How to get in on this trend: The possibilities to customize your walls are endless now! Elevate your hallways by adding classic millwork like board and batten or picture-frame moulding. Bring headboard paneling into your laundry room. Add a soft plaster finish to your fireplace, or wallpaper an office with a beautiful print.
